Turkey Dinner at Cracker Barrel food foodie lunch dinner turkey dressing gravy sweet potato casserole healthyliving healthylifestyle health healthy

Even though it’s not Thanksgiving yet, I still love turkey dinners! However, I have been working on my weight for the last 14 years. Therefore, I have to be very careful about carbohydrates, fats, and salt. Turkey by itself is healthy, but when you add dressing, gravy, breads, and pies, it adds up to lots of calories and fat! Cracker Barrel has a turkey dinner of turkey, gravy, and dressing that is about 600 calories … not bad. Cracker Barrel’s sweet potato casserole is 190 calories. So I have figured out a way to have my turkey dinner and eat it too! This is what I do:

  1. Eat less
  2. Drink lots of water
  3. Exercise immediately after eating
  4. Cut calories for the next few days

Eat Less

I ate all of the turkey but was careful not to eat too much gravy … minimize gravy. I ate about 2 tablespoons of the dressing, which is soooo good! I ate all of the sweet potato casserole, which was sweet and tasty. No need for dessert because the sweet potato casserole was filling and healthy. Pinched off a few pieces of the Cracker Barrel biscuit for taste … nice and fluffy and salty. One of my sides was broccoli, healthy and low calorie. I estimated the meal at 500 calories.

Drink Lots of Water

To save calories and flush out the salt, drink lots of water.

Exercise Immediately After Eating

I have found that this is a very effective strategy to keep the carbohydrates from turning to fat immediately. I exercise for 1 full hour immediately after eating fatty foods. The Hilton Garden Inn in Virginia has a very nice gym that’s clean with several types of exercise equipment, free weights, medicine balls, etc.

Cut Calories for the Next Few Days

For the next few days, be very aware of what you are eating and how many calories you are consuming. If you normally consume 1,600 calories per day, plan your diet so that you eat 100 calories less per day to make up for the extra calories in your favorite fatty food.

This 4-step strategy allows me to enjoy my favorite foods every now and then, maintain my weight loss plan. Try it — it may work for you too!
